Generation year ranges are conventions, not official definitions, and they differ by source. The Silent Generation to Generation Z ranges here follow the Pew Research Center. The Greatest Generation, Generation Alpha and Generation Beta ranges are common conventions. Mark McCrindle, who named Generation Alpha and Generation Beta, dates Alpha from 2010. Ages show the age people reach during this year.
Questions about generations
What are the 7 different generations and their years?
The seven generations most often listed are the Greatest Generation (born 1901 to 1927), the Silent Generation (1928 to 1945), Baby Boomers (1946 to 1964), Generation X (1965 to 1980), Millennials (1981 to 1996), Generation Z (1997 to 2012) and Generation Alpha (2013 to 2024). Children born from 2025 are being called Generation Beta, which makes eight. These ranges are conventions, and other sources move the lines by a year or more.
What generation am I in the UK?
The UK uses the same generation names and broadly the same year ranges as the US, so the calculator above works for UK birth years. No UK body sets official dates, and some UK sources draw the lines a year or two differently.
Am I Gen Y or millennial?
Generation Y and Millennials are two names for the same generation. On the ranges used here, anyone born from 1981 to 1996 is a Millennial, also called Gen Y. The Pew Research Center uses the name Millennials.
Am I Gen Z or Alpha?
On the ranges used here, people born from 1997 to 2012 are Generation Z and people born from 2013 to 2024 are Generation Alpha. Mark McCrindle, the researcher who named Generation Alpha, starts it in 2010, so children born from 2010 to 2012 can appear under either label.
What are the current generations in the workplace?
Most workplaces now have four generations: Baby Boomers, Generation X, Millennials and Generation Z. A few people from the Silent Generation, now in their eighties or older, still work, which can make five. Generation Alpha is still at school.
Why do the dates differ between sources?
No official body sets generation dates. The Pew Research Center describes them as reference points rather than scientific facts. Researchers choose cut-off years to suit their work. For example, McCrindle starts Generation Z in 1995, two years before the Pew Research Center does. This page uses the Pew Research Center ranges for the Silent Generation to Generation Z because they are widely cited.
Do generations really behave differently at work?
The evidence for large differences is weak. A 2020 report from the US National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine found that people within one generation differ from each other as much as people from different generations do. It concluded that differences at work are more likely to reflect age and career stage, and advised employers to focus on individual needs.
