This time and a half calculator turns an hourly rate into the time and a half rate, the double time rate and the double time and a half rate as you type. Add hours at each rate to see the gross pay.

Hours at each rate (optional)

Fill in only the boxes you need. Use decimals, so 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.5.

All figures are gross pay before taxes and withholding. Federal rules under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) are shown, and state rules can differ. This is general information and not legal advice. Nothing you enter is stored or sent. The math runs in your browser.

Salary to hourly rate helper

If you are paid a salary, use this to find the hourly rate behind it and its time and a half rate.

The helper divides the annual salary by 52 weeks and then by the weekly hours. Exempt salaried employees are not owed overtime under federal law. For a non-exempt employee with a bonus, two pay rates or a salary for more than 40 hours, the overtime calculator in Related tools works out the regular rate.

How the time and a half calculator works

Time and a half is 1.5 times the hourly rate. The US Department of Labor says covered, non-exempt employees must receive overtime pay for hours worked over 40 in a workweek, at a rate not less than time and one-half their regular rate of pay. The source is Department of Labor Fact Sheet #23. We checked the federal rules on this page on dol.gov on October 8, 2026.

  1. Time and a half rate = hourly rate × 1.5.
  2. Double time rate = hourly rate × 2.
  3. Double time and a half rate = hourly rate × 2.5.
  4. Pay at each rate = that rate × the hours worked at it.

Each rate is rounded to the nearest cent before it is multiplied by the hours, and the pay is rounded to the nearest cent. The Department of Labor works in whole cents in its own examples, such as the $11.16 regular rate in Fact Sheet #56C. At $15.33 an hour, time and a half is $22.995, which rounds up to $23.00, so 10 hours at time and a half pay $230.00.

Worked example: overtime at time and a half and double time

Jordan earns $22.00 an hour. In one week Jordan works 40 hours at the regular rate, 6 hours at time and a half and 4 hours at double time. Regular pay is $22.00 × 40 = $880.00. The time and a half rate is $33.00, so those 6 hours pay $198.00. The double time rate is $44.00, so those 4 hours pay $176.00. Total gross pay is $1,254.00 for 50 hours. Enter the same numbers above and the calculator gives the same figures. If you want an overtime time and a half calculator that splits a week of hours at 40 for you, use the overtime calculator in Related tools.

Double time calculator and double time and a half calculator

The same boxes work as a double time calculator and a double time and a half calculator. Enter the hourly rate and put the hours in the matching box. The Department of Labor’s FLSA questions and answers say the FLSA has no requirement for double time pay. Double time comes from state law, a union contract or an employer’s own policy. At $25.00 an hour, double time is $50.00 an hour and double time and a half is $62.50 an hour.

Holiday pay: time and a half calculator for holidays and weekends

Federal law does not require premium pay for working on a holiday or a weekend. The Department of Labor says the FLSA does not require extra pay for weekend or night work, and that it does not require payment for time not worked, such as vacations or holidays. Its holiday pay page says these benefits are generally a matter of agreement between an employer and an employee. Many employers do pay time and a half or more for holiday shifts by policy. To use this page as a holiday pay time and a half calculator, enter the holiday hours in the time and a half box, or in the double time box if that is your employer’s holiday rate. Hours worked on a holiday still count toward the 40 hours in the workweek.

When the overtime rate is more than 1.5 times the hourly rate

Federal overtime is based on the regular rate, which can be higher than the hourly rate when a nondiscretionary bonus was earned or the employee worked at two rates in the week. This page multiplies the hourly rate you enter. Use the overtime calculator for those cases.
