Congratulations on Promotion Message: Builder for Coworkers, Bosses and LinkedIn
Use this congratulations on promotion message builder to write to a coworker, a friend at work, your boss, a direct report, a client or the person who got the job you applied for. It also writes a LinkedIn post for announcing your own promotion. Choose the tone and the channel, and the builder gives you a message written by hand that you can copy and adjust. Nothing you type leaves this page.

How the builder works
The builder holds 140 messages. Each one was written by hand for one recipient and one tone, so promotion wishes for a colleague read differently from a note to your boss. There are five messages for every combination of recipient and tone. If you add a name or a job title, the builder puts it into the messages that have a natural place for it.
The channel changes the layout. Email adds a subject line, a greeting and a sign-off. Every message is 300 characters or fewer, so all of them fit in Slack, Teams or a LinkedIn comment. If you choose “Me”, the builder writes a LinkedIn post in the first person and ignores the name and channel boxes.
Worked example
Choose “A coworker”, Warm and Card. Type the name Sam and the job title Senior Analyst. The first message the builder gives is:
Sam, congratulations on your promotion to Senior Analyst. You make the people around you better at their jobs, me included. I am looking forward to seeing what you do with this.
Select “Another one” to see the other warm messages for a coworker.
How to write a congratulations on promotion message
A good message does three things. It says “congratulations on your promotion” in the first line. It names one thing about the person’s work that explains why the news makes sense to you. It wishes them well in the role. Two or three sentences are enough for a card or a chat message.
Promotion congratulations to a boss
Thank them for something specific, such as clear direction or honest feedback, and keep praise to what you have seen for yourself. A congratulations on promotion message to a boss reads as sincere when it is short. Long praise for someone who decides your next review can look like flattery to everyone else who signs the card.
When they got the job you applied for
Send the message early and keep it brief. You can be honest that you wanted the role, and you should be clear that they have your support. A short, gracious note now makes the next few months of working together easier for both of you.
“Congratulations on your new role” on LinkedIn
A LinkedIn comment is public, and the person’s new team may read it. One or two lines work best. Leave out private jokes, and leave out anything about how the decision was made.
What to avoid
- Pay. Do not mention the raise or guess at it.
- “Finally” and “about time.” They can sound like a complaint about the person’s employer, which is awkward in a card that other people will sign.
- Reasons that are not about work. Keep age, gender, family and other personal characteristics out of it. In the United States, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission states that it is illegal for an employer to base promotion decisions on protected characteristics such as race, sex, religion, national origin, age (40 or older) or disability. A message that links the promotion to one of them can embarrass the person and the employer. See the EEOC page on prohibited employment practices. Federal rules are shown here, and state rules can differ.
- Other candidates. Do not name who else applied or compare people.
- Asking for favors. Save requests for another day, even as a joke to someone you do not know well.
