How Many Pay Periods in a Year? Calculator for 2026, 2027 and 2028
How many pay periods in a year you have depends on your pay frequency: 52 for weekly pay, 26 for biweekly, 24 for semi-monthly and 12 for monthly. Some weekly schedules have 53 paydays in a year and some biweekly schedules have 27. This pay period calculator counts the real paydays for your own schedule and lists every date.
This calculator does not move paydays for weekends or holidays. It shows the scheduled date every time. If your employer pays early or late when a payday lands on a weekend or a holiday, the real date can differ by a day or two, so check your payroll calendar.
How many pay periods in a year, by pay frequency
This table shows the standard number of pay periods in a year for the four common pay frequencies. The standard counts match the pay periods per year listed in IRS Publication 15-T (2026), which payroll teams use for federal income tax withholding.
| Pay frequency | How often | Standard count | Paydays in one calendar year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weekly | Same weekday every week | 52 | 52 or 53 |
| Biweekly | Same weekday every two weeks | 26 | 26 or 27 |
| Semi-monthly | Two fixed dates a month | 24 | Always 24 |
| Monthly | One fixed date a month | 12 | Always 12 |
Which years have an extra payday
A weekly schedule has 53 paydays when the payday weekday occurs 53 times in the year. A biweekly schedule has 27 paydays only when a scheduled payday falls on January 1, or on January 1 or 2 in a leap year, so two employers that both pay on the same weekday can have different counts.
| Year | January 1 falls on | 53 weekly paydays if you are paid every | 27 biweekly paydays only if a payday falls on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026 | Thursday | Thursday | Thursday, January 1, 2026 |
| 2027 | Friday | Friday | Friday, January 1, 2027 |
| 2028 (leap year) | Saturday | Saturday or Sunday | Saturday, January 1 or Sunday, January 2, 2028 |
Every other weekly payday weekday has 52 paydays in that year. Whether a biweekly schedule has 27 paydays depends on the employer’s own cycle, which no table can tell you. Enter one of your paydays in the calculator above and it answers the question for your schedule.
January 1 is New Year’s Day. Some employers pay early when a payday falls on a holiday. On a schedule like that, a January 1 paycheck could be paid in late December instead, which would move the extra payday into the year before. The calculator counts the scheduled dates only.
How the number of pay periods in a year is counted
The calculator counts paydays, meaning the dates you are paid, that fall inside the calendar year from January 1 to December 31. That is the count that matters for a salary budget and for planning deductions per paycheck. A pay period that starts in late December and is paid in January counts toward the new year.
For weekly and biweekly pay, the calculator takes the one payday you enter and steps forward and back in blocks of 7 or 14 days. A year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks plus one day (plus two days in a leap year). Those one or two spare days are the reason some years fit a 53rd weekly payday or a 27th biweekly payday.
Semi-monthly pay periods follow the calendar instead of the week, so there are always two paydays a month and 24 a year. With the 15th and last day option, the second payday is the 28th, 29th, 30th or 31st depending on the month. In February 2028, a leap year, it is the 29th. Monthly pay always gives 12 paydays.
With biweekly pay, most months have two paychecks and two months a year have three (three months in a year with 27 paydays). With weekly pay, most months have four paychecks and four or five months have five. The calculator marks those months, which helps when deductions such as benefit premiums are only taken from two paychecks a month.
Worked example
An employee is paid biweekly on Fridays, and one of the paydays was Friday, January 2, 2026. The annual salary is $65,000. For 2026 the calculator shows 26 paydays, from January 2 to December 18, with three paychecks in January and July. Gross pay is $65,000 divided by 26, which is $2,500.00 per paycheck.
Change the year to 2027 and the same schedule has 27 paydays, from Friday, January 1 to Friday, December 31, with three paychecks in January, July and December. Two ways of handling the extra payday are common. Some employers keep each paycheck at $2,500.00, so the 27 paychecks add up to $67,500.00 for the year. Others divide the salary by 27, so each paycheck is $2,407.41 and the year still totals about $65,000. Ask your payroll team which approach applies to you.
Who decides how often you are paid
The US Department of Labor’s guide to the federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) says wages required by the FLSA are due on the regular payday for the pay period covered. Many states set rules on how often employees must be paid, and the Department of Labor keeps a table of state payday requirements covering weekly, biweekly, semi-monthly and monthly pay. The table was last revised on January 1, 2023, so confirm the current rule with your state labor office.

Questions about pay periods in a year
How many pay periods in a year are there?
There are 52 pay periods in a year for weekly pay, 26 for biweekly pay, 24 for semi-monthly pay and 12 for monthly pay. Counted by payday date, a weekly schedule can have 53 paydays in some calendar years and a biweekly schedule can have 27.
How many biweekly pay periods are there in 2026?
For biweekly pay periods 2026 has 26 paydays on almost every schedule. The one exception is a schedule with a payday on Thursday, January 1, 2026, which has 27 paydays, ending on Thursday, December 31, 2026.
Why do some years have 27 pay periods?
A biweekly schedule pays every 14 days, and 26 paydays cover 364 days. A year has 365 or 366 days, so the paydays drift one or two days earlier each year. A year has 27 pay periods when a payday falls on January 1, or on January 1 or 2 in a leap year, because a 27th payday then fits before December 31. For a fixed schedule this happens once every 11 or 12 years.
How many pay periods are there in 2027?
For pay periods in 2027, a weekly schedule has 53 paydays if payday is Friday and 52 on any other weekday. A biweekly schedule has 27 paydays if one of them falls on Friday, January 1, 2027, and 26 if not. Semi-monthly pay has 24 paydays and monthly pay has 12.
What is the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?
Biweekly pay comes every two weeks on the same weekday, which gives 26 paychecks in most years. Semi-monthly pay comes on two fixed dates a month, such as the 15th and the last day, which always gives 24. On a $65,000 salary that is $2,500.00 per biweekly paycheck or $2,708.33 per semi-monthly paycheck before taxes and deductions.
What does federal law say about paydays?
The US Department of Labor says wages required by the Fair Labor Standards Act are due on the regular payday for the pay period covered. Many states set their own rules on how often employees must be paid, and the Department of Labor publishes a table of state payday requirements.
