How the builder works
The builder holds 120 messages. Each one was written by hand for one kind of manager and one tone, so a note to a new manager does not claim years of history, and a note from the whole team says “we”. There are five messages for every combination. If you add a name or something to thank them for, the builder puts it into the message as plain text.
The channel changes the layout. Email adds a subject line, a greeting and a sign-off. Slack or Teams keeps to messages of 300 characters or fewer. “Another one” moves through every message for your choices before any repeats.
Worked example
Choose “A long-time manager”, Sincere and Card. Type the name Dana, and in the last box type “explaining the reasons behind decisions”. The first message the builder gives is:
Happy Boss’s Day, Dana. After all this time, I still leave our conversations with a clearer head than I came in with. Thank you for that, and for your patience over the years. Thank you especially for explaining the reasons behind decisions.
Select “Another one” to see the other sincere messages for a long-time manager.
When is National Boss’s Day, and what makes a good National Boss Day message?
National Boss’s Day is observed in the United States on October 16 each year. When October 16 falls on a weekend, it is marked on the nearest working day. In 2026, October 16 is a Friday. In 2027, October 16 is a Saturday, so under that rule Boss’s Day is observed on Friday, October 15, 2027. In 2028 it falls on Monday, October 16. It is not a public holiday, and businesses open as normal. The reference site timeanddate.com gives the date rule and the history on its page about Boss’s Day in the United States. It says Patricia Bays Haroski registered the day with the US Chamber of Commerce in 1958.
Taking part is optional
Nobody should feel pressed to mark Boss’s Day. A manager has a say over pay and promotion, so a gift that travels upward can feel like an obligation to the people asked to chip in. If your team wants to do something, a card or a short message is enough. Do not collect money from colleagues, do not keep a list of who signed, and do not comment on who did not. Managers can help by saying in advance that gifts are not expected.
Sincere without flattery
A good national boss day message works as a thank you message for a boss. Name one thing they do that helps you to do your job, and say what difference it makes. “Thank you for explaining the reasons behind decisions” is specific and believable. “Best boss ever” could be written to anyone. Keep to what you have seen for yourself, and keep it to two or three sentences.
A boss day message in a card
For a boss day message in a card that the whole team signs, write two lines and leave room for others. Read what is already there and say something different. A boss day card message is read by everyone who signs after you, so keep private jokes for a private note.
A funny boss day message
A funny boss day message works when the joke is about shared routines such as meetings, email and deadlines. Avoid jokes about the manager’s habits or temper, and avoid anything that sounds like a request for a favor. If you are not sure how it will be read, choose the sincere tone.

What do you write in a Boss’s Day card from the team?
Write “we”, keep it to two or three sentences and thank the manager for something the whole team benefits from. For example: “Happy Boss’s Day from the whole team. Thank you for listening to us, for being straight with us and for keeping the pressure off when you can.” Choose “Our manager, from the whole team” in the builder for more.

No. Taking part in Boss’s Day is optional, and nobody should feel pressed to give a gift to a manager. A short, sincere message or a signed card is enough. Teams should not collect money or keep track of who took part.
What is a funny Boss’s Day message that is still appropriate?
Joke about shared work routines and never about the person. For example: “Happy Boss’s Day. We have worked together so long that I can predict your edits. I still leave a few in for you to find.” Choose the Light humor tone in the builder for more.
How do you thank a boss without it sounding like flattery?
Thank them for one thing you have seen for yourself and say how it helped your work. For example: “Happy Boss’s Day. Thank you for the honest feedback, including the parts I did not want to hear. I use your advice more often than you know.” Avoid superlatives such as “best boss ever”.
