Your shortlist
The shortlist is kept only while this page is open. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere.
Group name generator for chats and social groups
The tool also works as a group name generator. Choose “Group chat or social group” as the team type to get names for a work group chat, a lunch club, a book group or a group of friends. Pick the funny or punny tone for a chat name, or the professional tone for a social committee or a staff network. You can still add a keyword, such as the name of your office or your street.
How to choose a team name
- Keep it to two or three words. Short names fit chat channels, email subject lines and slides.
- Say it out loud. Some names read well and sound awkward in a meeting.
- Make sure people outside the team can tell what the team does, or at least are not confused by the name.
- Check that everyone on the team is comfortable with it. A joke that only half the team enjoys will not last.
- Avoid inside jokes that new joiners will not understand.
- Match the tone to where the name will appear. A quiz night can take a pun. A name on a client report usually needs to be plainer.
- Shortlist five or six names and let the team vote.

Questions about team names
What makes a good team name for work?
A good work team name is short, easy to say out loud and clear enough that people outside the team understand it. Two or three words usually works best. It should suit everyone on the team and still read well in an email subject line, a chat channel name and a slide.
How do I use the team name generator?
Choose a team type and a tone, then select Generate names to see 12 names. Add a keyword such as your department name, or a starting letter, if you want them worked into the results. Select More names for a fresh set, and add the ones you like to the shortlist so you can copy them in one go.
What are some funny team names for work?
Funny work team names usually come from shared office life. Examples from this page include Reply All Survivors, Camera Off Club, Snack Drawer Auditors and Scope Creep Survivors. Keep the joke kind, and check that everyone on the team is happy to be introduced under that name.
Can I use this as a group name generator for a group chat?
Yes. Choose “Group chat or social group” as the team type and the group name generator gives 12 names at a time for group chats, social clubs and groups of friends. Examples from this page include Sorry, Just Seen This, Thread Carefully, Muted Until Friday and The Ping Dynasty. Choose a name that everyone in the group is happy to see on their phone.
Can I use these team names for free?
Yes. The generator is free and you can use the names for internal teams, quiz nights, step challenges and volunteering days. The names are built from everyday words, but this page does not check trademarks. If you plan to use a name in public or for a product, check that nobody else already uses it.
How should a team choose its name?
Shortlist five or six names, share them with the whole team and hold a quick vote. Say each name out loud first, because some names read better than they sound. Avoid inside jokes that new joiners will not understand.
